4-methylquinoline, also known as Lepidine or cincholepidine, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as diphenylethers. These are aromatic compounds containing two benzene rings linked to each other through an ether group. Its methyl group is fairly acidic, allowing for condensations to occur at this position, especially when the nitrogen is quaternized. Lepidine is a very strong basic compound (based on its pKa). Outside of the human body, lepidine has been detected, but not quantified in, brassicas. This could make lepidine a potential biomarker for the consumption of these foods. It is used in the preparation of certain dyes. Lepidine, or 4-methylquinoline, is a heterocyclic aromatic organic compound.
